When you need it

Your partners ask for ETIM data in BMEcat.

Distributors of technical products expect product data in a shared vocabulary and a shared format. ETIM or ECLASS gives the vocabulary, and BMEcat carries it. Without both, every partner gets a different spreadsheet.

  • Wholesalers send you ETIM or ECLASS templates to fill in.
  • Your product data sits in a PIM or ERP but is not classified to a standard.
  • Each partner asks for a different file, and preparing them is manual work.
  • You sell in several countries and need one technical description every market reads the same way.
  • A partner rejected your BMEcat file, or you have never produced one.

ETIM, ECLASS or BMEcat: what does each one do?

ETIM and ECLASS are classifications that describe a product; BMEcat is the file format that sends the description to partners. Most projects need one classification and BMEcat.

FAQ

Before we talk.

What is the difference between ETIM and BMEcat?

ETIM is a classification model: it puts a product into a class and describes it with standard features and values. BMEcat is an XML format for sending product catalogues between systems. ETIM describes the product, and BMEcat carries that description to your partners.

Do we need ETIM or ECLASS?

Use what your partners ask for. ETIM is common among technical wholesalers, for example for electrical and HVAC products, and ECLASS is common in industrial procurement. We can map the same product data to both and export either one in BMEcat. More in product classification standards compared.

Does the ETIM Mapper need Pimcore?

Yes, the ETIM Mapper is a tool that works inside Pimcore. If your product data lives in another PIM, tell us which one and we will check how to classify and export the data there.

How long does an ETIM and BMEcat implementation take?

It depends on the number of product groups and how complete your data is. We start with one product group and one partner, which shows the effort for the rest of the range before you commit to it.

Which BMEcat version should we use?

Use the version your partners ask for. BMEcat 1.2 covers simple catalogues, and BMEcat 2005 adds the features that larger and international catalogues need. ETIM publishes its own BMEcat guideline (ETIM BMEcat 5.0, 2021), and ECLASS ADVANCED data uses BMEcat 2005.1-advanced.

Can supplier data be classified before it reaches the PIM?

Yes. openProd, our separate product for supplier data onboarding, maps supplier files to your data model, including classifications, so data arrives in the PIM already structured.
